I’m tired of all the snow. Who’s with me? I saw this weekend that even our neighbors in the south got a dusting.
I’m ready for winter to be over and this is the time of year when I always get big ideas for my flower gardens. Are you the same way? I’m going to plant a separate cutting garden so my street-side beds look full. I’m going to mix in more perennials so I’m not spending so much each year. And, of course, I’m going to stay on top of the weeds. Pretty easy to do when there’s still a foot of snow outside!
But I do have a new tool to keep me on track – my gardening diary from last year. I’ve always had trouble remembering what and where I planted from year to year. Last summer, I did pretty well in recording my garden’s progress so this year I can build on that. For instance, I tried impatiens in a new spot that was nice and shady in May – but by July the sun was beating down on them by 4:00. They did not like that at all! So, today I’m sketching out my flower beds on grid paper – and petunias and alyssum are going in that sunny bed.
Now is a great time to start your own gardening journal. Put your sketches in, clippings from catalogs and notes from how things grew last year. You’ll be amazed by how much you learn from year to year and you’ll avoid making costly mistakes. Happy Gardening!
